When God Breaks Through the Fog

“For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

— John 5:46–47

““But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.”

— Luke 16:31

Humanity lives in a kind of spiritual fog—a world where the eternal feels distant and the immediate feels consuming. It’s a fog of distraction, self-deception, pride, and unbelief. But from the beginning, God has not been silent. He gave the Law through Moses—not as the final answer, but as a signpost. A roadmap. A preparation.

The Law taught justice, mercy, holiness, and dependence on God—but more than that, it pointed forward. It prepared hearts to recognize someone greater. In John 5, Jesus says plainly that Moses wrote about Him. Yet those who claimed to believe Moses missed the One to whom Moses pointed. In Luke 16, Abraham tells the rich man that Moses and the Prophets were sufficient warning. But the rich man, like many of us, wanted something more sensational—a resurrection, a miracle, a breakthrough.

Here’s the twist: that breakthrough already happened.

And they still didn’t believe.

What both passages declare—powerfully, chillingly—is this: if we reject the truth that has already been revealed, no amount of signs, even resurrection, will change our hearts. What we need is not more evidence—what we need is a spiritual breakthrough. We need God to pierce through the fog.

That’s exactly what Jesus does.

Jesus is the breakthrough of God into human existence. He is the visible, tangible manifestation of eternal truth—God’s glory, love, and faithfulness wrapped in flesh and blood. Where the Law offered a shadow, Jesus brought the reality. Where the Prophets gave glimpses, Jesus opened the full window. Through Him, the eternal breaks into the temporal to awaken us.

This theme was explored recently in VoxNotas’ “Integrity Through the Fog – Part 4”, which reflected on Luke 16 and the idea that our lives are often obscured by fog, yet God has spoken through His Word and ultimately through Christ. That sermon captured the heart of this series: God doesn’t leave us lost—He comes to find us.

This is Part One in a larger journey—a series that will move from this moment of breakthrough into deeper reflections on submission, spiritual rebirth, and the inner transformation required to see and desire God.

In our culture today, we do not—and often would not—recognize the message about the Law of Moses with the same clarity, weight, or urgency that Jesus’ original audience did. But even if the reference point has shifted, the human condition remains the same. We are still prone to demand signs, to ask for miracles, to delay belief until God “proves” Himself on our terms. And yet, like the rich man in the parable and the skeptics in John’s Gospel, we’ve already been given all the proof we need. The challenge isn’t lack of evidence—it’s the posture of our hearts. That tension deserves to be explored further.
