When God Breaks Through the Fog

“For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
John 5:46–47

“But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
Luke 16:31

Humanity lives in a kind of spiritual fog. The eternal feels far off, and whatever is right in front of us feels urgent. Distraction, self deception, pride, unbelief. All of it stacks up until truth feels distant, even when it is close.

But from the beginning, God has not been silent. He gave the Law through Moses, not as the final destination, but as a signpost. A preparation. A way of forming a people who could recognize what was coming.

The Law taught justice, mercy, holiness, and dependence on God. But it also pointed forward. It trained hearts to look for Someone greater.

That is what makes Jesus’ words in John 5 so sharp. He tells them plainly that Moses wrote about Him. Yet the people who claimed to believe Moses could not see the One Moses was pointing to.

And Luke 16 hits the same nerve from a different angle. Abraham tells the rich man that Moses and the Prophets were enough. But the rich man wants something louder. Something undeniable. A miracle. A resurrection. A sign that forces belief.

Here is the haunting part. Even if someone rose from the dead, it would not be enough for a heart that has already decided it will not listen.

Both passages are saying the same thing. If we reject the truth God has already revealed, we will not be rescued by more spectacle. More evidence is not the cure for a resistant heart. The need is deeper than information. The need is a breakthrough.

That is exactly what Jesus is.

Jesus is the breakthrough of God into human existence. Not just another messenger, but the visible, tangible manifestation of eternal truth. God’s glory, love, and faithfulness wrapped in flesh and blood. Where the Law gave a shadow, Jesus brought the substance. Where the Prophets gave glimpses, Jesus opened the window.

The eternal did not stay distant. It stepped into time to wake us up.

This idea was explored recently in VoxNotas’ “Integrity Through the Fog – Part 4,” reflecting on Luke 16 and the way our lives can be obscured by fog, even while God has spoken clearly through His Word and ultimately through Christ. The heart of it is simple. God does not leave us lost. He comes to find us.

This is Part One in a larger journey. The series will move from this moment of breakthrough into deeper reflections on submission, spiritual rebirth, and the inner transformation required to see God clearly and actually desire Him.

And even though most people today do not feel the weight of “Moses and the Law” the way Jesus’ original audience did, the human condition has not changed. We still delay belief. We still ask God to prove Himself on our terms. We still look for something dramatic enough to finally settle the question.

But the unsettling truth is that the proof has already been given. The issue is rarely lack of evidence. It is the posture of the heart.

And that tension is worth sitting in, because it is where real clarity begins.
