“What Is Sin?” Discussion Guide

Opening Thought

“We live in a world where talking about sin feels uncomfortable. It’s either ignored, joked about, or treated like it’s just a religious buzzword. But the Bible talks a lot about sin—not to shame us, but to show us what freedom and relationship with God really looks like. So let’s talk about it—real talk, no fluff.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What do you think of when you hear the word sin?

(Follow-up: Is it a word you use in your daily life? Why or why not?)

  • Purpose: Opens the door to honest perception—some may associate sin with “religious guilt,” others with “mistakes,” or “bad stuff.”
  • Encourage vulnerability: No wrong answers.

2. Why do you think people avoid talking about sin?

(Follow-up: What makes it uncomfortable?)

  • Surface social reasons (guilt, judgment culture) vs. deeper spiritual reasons (conviction, fear of being known).

3. Does sin matter if God loves us unconditionally?

(Follow-up: How would you explain sin’s impact on a relationship, not just religion?)

  • This question brings grace and love into view without minimizing holiness.

4. How do you think sin affects our relationship with God?

(Follow-up: Is it more like breaking a rule… or breaking trust?)

  • Highlight that sin isn’t just legal—it’s relational. Like damaging a friendship, not just breaking a contract.

Verses to Ground the Conversation

1 John 1:8–9 (Honesty & Grace)

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive…”

Romans 3:23–24 (Everyone’s in the same boat)

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace…”

Isaiah 59:2 (Relational impact)

“Your iniquities have separated you from your God…”

Psalm 32:5 (Freedom through confession)

“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity… and you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

Closing Reflection Questions (if time allows)

  • What’s one area in your life where you’ve felt the “weight” of sin—but also seen God’s grace?
  • What would change if we started viewing sin not as a shameful label, but as a chance to move closer to God?
