When You’re Looking for a Sign — But Need a Word

Christian Living, Spiritual Growth

There’s something in all of us that wants to see something. A nudge. A sign. A confirmation. Something that tells us God is paying attention, and that we’re on the right track.

That desire is understandable. But signs can become dangerous when we are not grounded in the Word.

Because without Scripture shaping us, we almost always interpret life through our own desires. We do not see God’s will. We see our will reflected back at us.

We do not need to chase signs.
We need to pursue Jesus.

And the Spirit was sent to lead us there, not through emotional guesswork, but through divine reminders.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
John 14:26

That is the anchor.

If we want to recognize the Spirit’s voice, if we want to discern God’s leading, we have to start with what Jesus said. And what Jesus said is recorded for us in Scripture.

The Spirit doesn’t improvise, He reminds

The Holy Spirit does not freelance. He does not contradict Jesus. He does not lead you away from what Christ has already spoken. He brings to remembrance what Jesus said, and He presses it into real life with clarity and conviction.

Which leads to a simple challenge.

If we do not know what Jesus said, we will not recognize the Spirit’s voice when He is reminding us.

If you are not in the Word, the Spirit has very little to remind you of.

Why some signs cannot be trusted

When people chase signs without being anchored in Scripture, a few things tend to happen.

They start finding meaning in everything, and they almost always find what they already wanted to see.

They begin to feel spiritual without actually becoming obedient.

They stop trusting what God has revealed and start living off impressions, coincidences, and emotional momentum.

That is not faith. That is projection.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
Jeremiah 17:9

That is why the Word has to be the filter, and mature community has to be part of the process.

For new believers, and longtime believers who have never been in the Word

If you are just starting out, or if you have been around Christianity for years but have not lived in the Word, here is the call.

Do not chase signs to feel close to God.
Chase Scripture so you can recognize when He is already near.

Start simple. Get with older believers. Ask someone to walk with you. Scripture assumes that guidance and safety often come through God’s people.

“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 11:14

Do not navigate your faith alone. God gives us the body of Christ, brothers and elders and wise counselors, to help us test what we think we are hearing.

“Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
1 John 4:1

Signs can mislead when you are isolated. But when you are anchored in Scripture and surrounded by godly counsel, discernment sharpens and confusion loses its power.

False signs often point to flashy things

Let’s be honest. The “signs” we want usually point toward what we already want.

Success.
Comfort.
Approval.
Money.
Recognition.

But Jesus warned us not to confuse God’s care with worldly shine.

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
Matthew 6:28–29

We do not need to be dressed in gold. We do not need a million dollar confirmation.

We need daily manna, not luxury buffets.

When God speaks, it is often not to promise us more. It is to remind us we already have enough, because we have Him.

Want to hear God, read what He already said

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27

If you want to recognize His voice, get familiar with how He sounds. What He values. What He blesses. What He warns against. What His heart is like.

That is what Scripture does. It does not just give commands. It gives you a growing familiarity with the Shepherd.

Practical steps for the week

  1. Replace sign chasing with Scripture soaking
Before you look for confirmation in your circumstances, ask, have I sought clarity in the Word.
Start with the Gospels. Let Jesus reset your instincts.
  2. Ask the Spirit to remind you
    Each day, pray something simple.
Holy Spirit, remind me of what Jesus said. Speak to me through His Word today.
  3. Filter every “sign” through the Word and community
If something feels like a sign, pause and ask.
Does this align with Scripture. Does it reflect Jesus’ character. Would mature believers affirm this.
  4. Seek counsel
Do not walk alone. Invite input from godly men who are rooted in the Word. Let their discernment sharpen yours.

Reflection questions

Have I ever mistaken my own desire for God’s direction. What helped me see the difference.

Am I seeking God’s voice primarily through signs, or through His Word.

How have I seen God provide in unexpected, simple, or humble ways this week.

Who are the trusted brothers I can bring into my discernment process when I think I have seen a sign.

When you are hungry for God to speak, remember this.

The Spirit will remind you.
But only if there is something in you to remind.

So fill your heart with Scripture. Walk closely with godly men. And let the voice of Jesus, not the voice of your desires, shape the path you take.
