Orientation. Identification. Valuation. (Luke 3:21–22)

Most of us live on a steady diet of approval. We check the phone to see who noticed. We shape our words to impress a boss. We look for ways to be desired, respected, or admired. We want to be recognized for what we bring and celebrated for what we achieve. Approval can feel like oxygen, but when it comes from the wrong source, it slowly starts to rule us.

Scripture does not soften this. John says some loved the glory that comes from people more than the glory that comes from God (John 12:43). Paul asks whether he is seeking the approval of man or of God (Galatians 1:10). Approval hunger is dangerous because it bends reality, hijacks choices, and never satisfies. It trains a person to borrow worth from a crowd. It turns identity into a vote. It keeps moving the standard so satisfaction stays out of reach.

The way out is not thicker skin or pretending you do not care. The way out is learning to receive what God says as final and to live from it the way Jesus did.

Anchor at the Jordan

Luke 3:21–22

Jesus is praying. Heaven opens. The Spirit descends. The Father speaks.

And what the Father says is foundational.

You are my Son.
I love you.
I am pleased with you.

Orientation: Prayer that returns our attention to God

Approval hunger is not only a social or emotional issue. It is spiritual. Underneath it is a question of worship and trust. Prayer is where the heart turns back toward God and stops letting human approval become the center.

In prayer, I name what is true. God is Father. I am his child in Christ. I need the Spirit. I cannot manufacture what only God can give, and the world cannot replace it.

Identification: Adoption that makes us family

You are my son or daughter.

For those in Christ, this becomes our foundation. Paul says those led by the Spirit are sons of God, and that we have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:14–15). He also says that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts (Galatians 4:6).

Let the Father’s naming of you interrupt the other names and labels that try to attach themselves to you during the day.

Valuation: The Father’s love that sets our value

I love you. I am pleased with you.

At the river, the Father gives more than a title. He gives love and pleasure. In Christ, this becomes our value. We do not bring worth to God as though he needed something from us. We are loved by our Creator, redeemed by his Son, and brought into his family by grace. Our value is shown by the price he was willing to pay to make us his.

God says, “Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you” (Isaiah 43:4). In Christ, the belovedness of the Son is shared with those who belong to him.

The Son’s work secures your place. The Father’s declaration tells you who you are. The Spirit presses this truth into the heart so you can begin to live without being ruled by the approval of others.

When the Father’s voice becomes enough

The kingdom of God is seen wherever a person comes under the will of God. When approval no longer rules you, submission to God starts to feel like freedom because you are receiving what he says as true.

You can tell the truth without masking.
You can serve without needing to be seen.
You can work hard without needing applause.
You can love without asking others to carry your worth.

The world teaches you to build a self out of what you do and how people see you. The kingdom teaches you to receive your life in Christ and live as one who belongs to the Father.

Return to the river often enough to remember what God has already declared over you.

Orientation. Identification. Valuation.

Pray so your attention returns to God. Receive your identity in Christ, named by the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Accept that your value is rooted in his love for you and in what he paid to bring you into relationship with him.

Seek this daily, and your desire for God’s approval will grow. Over time, his voice begins to carry more weight than the opinions of others. The approval of people may still affect you, but it no longer has to govern you, because the Father has already spoken over you in Christ.
